One of his most famous performances came in his debut Test match where he scored a century against England, becoming the first Indian to do so in Test cricket. He was also the first Indian captain to win a Test series, leading India to victory against Pakistan in 1952.
After retiring from cricket, Lala Amarnath served as a national selector and coach for the Indian cricket team. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award, in 1991 for his contribution to Indian cricket.
